A pump can be a device used to move fluids, for example fluids or slurries. Centrifugal pump is actually a device for moving liquids and gases. The two significant parts of the device would be the impeller (a wheel with vanes) and the circular pump casing about it. Within the most common variety, known as the volute centrifugal pump, fluid enters the pump at higher speed close to the centre of the rotating impeller and is thrown against the casing from the vanes. The centrifugal pressure forces the fluid via an opening inside the casing. This outlet widens progressively within a spiral fashion, which reduces the speed from the fluid and thereby increases pressure. Centrifugal pumps make a continuous flow of fluid.

A centrifugal pump operates by converting kinetic energy into possible energy measurable as static fluid pressure at the outlet from the pump. This action is described by Bernoulli's principle.

Vertical centrifugal pumps are also referred to as cantilever pumps. They utilize a unique shaft and bearing support configuration that allows the volute to hang inside the sump while the bearings are outside on the sump. This style of pump uses no stuffing box to seal the shaft but instead utilizes a "throttle Bushing". A frequent application for this style of pump is within a parts washer.
